The night sky, a portal to the vast universe, is under threat from an unexpected source: satellites. As the number of satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) continues to skyrocket, astronomers are losing their view of the cosmos. In lab tests, the researchers found that coating satellites with Vantablack 310 significantly reduced their reflectivity. The coated satellite scored between 6.7 and 7.0 on the AB magnitude scale, which is much lower than the magnitude 3.7 scored by an uncoated SpaceX satellite. This improvement is crucial, as the International Astronomical Union recommends a brightness threshold of magnitude 7 for satellites.

The team also used an electron microscope to study the physical properties of the ultra-black coating. They discovered "coral-like features with cavity-like depressions," which help trap light and contribute to the material's exceptional blackness.

While Vantablack 310 shows promise, the researchers emphasize that it is just one part of the solution. The space debris problem remains a significant challenge, and a comprehensive approach is needed to address both issues.

As space becomes increasingly crowded, the impact on astronomers and those who cherish the night sky is undeniable. Noelia Noël, another astrophysicist involved in the research, states: "Space is becoming increasingly crowded, creating challenges not only for astronomers but for everyone who values an unspoiled night sky."
